I spent 4 months on the northern calif. coast doing travel nursing assignments. The first 8 weeks was down near Fortuna, Ca. There are alot of things to do there for the price of a few gallons of gas (ugh). Stroll around Ferndale, it's a quaint little victorian town with many cute shops to peruse. Ferndale is the home of the Humbolt County fair. It has real live horse racing as well as all the other amenities you would expect at a fair. A short drive from Ferndale takes you up and over the mountains to the "Lost Coast"; and you can loop drive back into the redwoods through some picturesque small towns arriving only 30 miles or so below Rio Dell in the heart of the redwoods. Take a picnic lunch as there aren't many stores or restuarants on the way. Before you go, try stopping
at the cheese factory in Loleta. Another free thing that is fun to do, maybe pick up some goodies for the road.
